Neem oil is the natural extract by crushing dried seeds of neem tree. Neem oil is biodegradable and non-toxic and so its safe on birds, pets, animals when used. The neem oil available is made from cold-pressed neem seeds. Neem oil has got multiple benefits like insecticide, fungicide, bactiricide to use in garden and farming.
Insecticide:
Neem oil act as insecticide in farming or gardening. It acts on insects like
- Caterpillars
- Tomato hornworms
- Corn earworm
- Aphids
- Mites
- Scale
- Leaf hoppers
- White flies
- Mites
- Mealybugs
- Thrips
- Wooly apply aphids
- Rose leafhoppers
- Tarnished plant bug
Azadirachta, insecticidal component found in neem repel and protect plants from insects. Neem oil doesn’t create bad effects around the plants sprayed like other synthetic insecticides so that beneficial insects is not affected. Azadirachtin stops leaf sucking and chewing insects.
Neem kernel extracts also controls root-knot nematodes by preventing larvae from hatching.
Neem oil will protect indoor and ornamental plants from common pests, worms and caterpillars which ruin the leaves, fruits. Also spraying neem oil keeps the mosquitoes away from your garden.
Fungicide:
Neem oil also act and kill common fungus found on the plants. It works effectively on powdery mildew and other common fungal diseases, including:
- Black spot
- Scab
- Leaf spot
- Anthracnose
- Tip blight
- Rusts
- Wilts
- Stem rots
- Fire blight
- Verticillium wilt
- Orange rust
To prevent fungal attack, spray neem oil every 7 to 14 days. And if the plant is attacked, spray once a week to kill fungus and then spray every 2 weeks to avoid it from coming back.
Bactiricide:
Neem oil also act as bactiricide to kill fire bright which is a bacterial disease. The symptoms will be wilted leaves and appear as they have been burned.
Neem oil will be effective after repeated applications. Insects doesn’t get immune to neem oil as it happen with other types of pesticides. As neem oil is biodegradable and non-toxic it will not pollute the ground water or water streams or water bodies.
Safe on Pollinators and Beneficial Insects:
Neem oil is complete safe on bees, butterflies and lady bugs. Pollinators are safe when neem oil is sprayed in smaller quantities. Spraying neem oil in the evening and early mornings don’t cause harm to beneficial insects such as bees and other pollinating insects.
Earthworms are much beneficial in our soil as they tunnel through the soil and create pathways that makes soil breath the air and rain water reach the plant roots easily. Unlike synthetic insecticides, neem oil doesn’t harm beneficial earthworms
Method of Usage:
Neem oil has to be diluted in water mixing with any available solvent to get properly mixed and easy to spray. The diluted solution in right proportions with water and oil can be sprayed on the plants throughout the planting season untill the day of harvest.
Dosage:
Add 5-10ml neem to 10ml any available solvent (soapnut solution, soap water) and dilute in 1 litre water. Shake well such that solution gets mixed properly and spray on the plants.
